Coverages
You may have already begun to receive COVID-19 related coverage questions from policyholders. The most common inquiries are likely prompted because some businesses may be closing voluntarily, while others may worry, they will be asked to close by a governmental authority. Coverage for business interruption losses under standard Business and Personal Property Coverage would not be triggered by voluntary or forced business closures alone, because there is no physical damage to the premises. Standard policies also exclude loss caused by order of any civil authority, including seizure, confiscation, destruction, or quarantine of property, which many policyholders may be facing in the coming weeks. We understand that policyholders, like the rest of us, are doing their best to navigate these unfamiliar times, and we will of course review the specific facts of any claim presented and evaluate each coverage situation on an individual basis.
